Support for Members’ Participation in the

SOMUS – COMCOL – ICOM
16–20 August 2026, Peru

 

To encourage the participation of SOMUS – COMCOL – ICOM colleagues in SOMUS – COMCOL – ICOM activities, we are pleased to announce up to four (4) travel grants of seven hundred Euros (€700) each for SOMUS members and one (1) travel grant of one thousand two hundred euros (€1,200) for young members of SOMUS (up to 35 years of age) who wish to participate in the joint International Conference of the International Committees COMCOL (Collecting) and SOMUS (Social Museology), entitled:

“Social Museology, Sustainability and Community-Based Collections Management”

The conference will take place from 16–20 August 2026 at the Túcume Site Museum, Lambayeque, Peru.

Travel Grant Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be able to write and understand English or Spanish fluently.
  • Be museum professionals working for or with museums and heritage institutions, or students with a demonstrably relevant background in collecting and collection strategies.
  • Be individual members of SOMUS – COMCOL – ICOM.
  • Have submitted a conference proposal that has been accepted, or, in the case of young members, to be able to present a reflection on their work as museum professionals engaged with Social Museology.
  • Be aware that priority will be given to members from countries belonging to Categories 4, 3, and 2.
  • Be aware that members who have received grants during the previous three years (2023, 2024, and 2025) will not be given priority for a grant in 2026.
  • Be up to date with membership dues for 2023, 2024, and 2025. New ICOM members who joined in 2025 must have paid their dues for both 2025 and 2026.
  • Hold a valid passport and be able to travel.

Application Deadline

The deadline for submitting applications is July 5, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. (ET).

Applications received after this date and time will not be considered.

Selection Process

Applications will be evaluated by the SOMUS Board.

All Applications Must Include:

  1. A completed and signed application form.
  2. A motivation statement of up to 500 words explaining your interest in attending the joint SOMUS – COMCOL – ICOM Conference in Peru, addressing the following questions:
    • What are the most important reasons motivating your participation in the conference?
    • How will your participation benefit your museum or the museum communities with which you work?
    • How do you plan to disseminate the information and knowledge gained during the conference in your home country?
  3. An estimate of travel costs from your place of residence to Peru.
  4. A copy of a valid travel document (passport or identity card).
  5. A curriculum vitae including academic background, professional experience, publications, and current responsibilities within your institution (maximum one page).
  6. A letter or email confirming acceptance of your conference proposal.

Each grant recipient will be required to complete a questionnaire within two weeks after the conference, describing their experience and contribution to SOMUS – COMCOL – ICOM activities.

This information will be used to prepare a conference report to be published on the COMCOL website.

The resources available for this programme are limited. Applicants must comply with all eligibility requirements set out in this document.

The grants will cover:

  • Airfare in Economy Class (at the most reasonable available fare).
  • Accommodation for the duration of the meeting.
  • Registration fees.

The following expenses will not be covered under any circumstances:

  • Travel insurance.
  • Visa costs.
  • Local transportation.
  • Meals (some meals might be covered by the host institution of this conference).
  • Any other expenses related to members’ participation.
